Mitel Networks' NuPoint unified voice messaging system and the SS8 messaging products share the common heritage of growing out of the Centigram Communications voice mail product line. Centigram was divided into two divisions, one that focused on Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) and the other on the Service Provider market. The CPE division was purchased by Mitel and initially run as Baypoint Innovations. Later, that name went away and the product line became known as NuPoint Messenger from Mitel Networks. The new Unified Messaging (UM) products are SIP-based and run on Linux servers but have the same user look and feel as the traditional Centigram product. The Service Provider product line stayed with Centigram and the company was subsequently sold to ADC. ADC spun this product line out as its own company (along with some other products, most notably a legal intercept line) and became known as SS8. SS8 still markets an enhanced version ot the traditional voice mail product line which has had continued imporvements. There is also a new version available that combines the original product feature set including the TUI along with many new ones, and has been ported over to a Sun Solaris server. |
